Greg believes that the vertical development of the jaw, eruption of the teeth, oral pressure, tongue posture, lip seal, chewing, and breathing mechanics should be considered together rather than as separate subjects.
When the oral cavity does not develop adequate space, the teeth, tongue, jaws, and surrounding muscles may adapt to the available structure.
Those adaptations can alter the child’s developmental trajectory.
The Meaning of 10,000 Steps
“10,000 steps” is an analogy, not a literal chewing prescription.
There is no universal number of chews or specific workload that every child must complete.
The message is simply that developing structures require appropriate, repeated use.
Parents should not force hard foods or introduce textures that are inappropriate for their child’s age, readiness, chewing ability, or swallowing safety.
Instead, parents can ask qualified feeding, dental, pediatric, or myofunctional professionals whether their child is receiving appropriate opportunities to chew, develop oral coordination, and progress through food textures safely.
Development is shaped by what the body repeatedly experiences.
The daily work may look small, but those repetitions can become the oral system’s version of 10,000 steps.
